It depends....and really, you can translate this question to any instrument. Charlie Parker played incredibly fast on the sax, and is known as one of the most incredible virtuosos of all time. Yngwie was incredibly fast as well on the guitar, but most now laugh him off as a musical masturbator. I think the difference lies in how the solos are played....if they have any soul within the speed.

As a self-taught drummer myself, i'm able to inform you that there incredibly isn't any 'quickly" thanks to study an device. It takes an outstanding style of staying power, prepare, self-discipline, and exertions. Now that being reported, some human beings do study swifter than others so it surely relies upon on the guy. I surely have 2 cousins that both play guitar and both are self-taught. My one cousin Terry practiced only about daily and picked it up swifter than my cousin Dave, who did not prepare almost as a lot. Terry grew to develop into incredibly darn reliable in about 8 months. all of it boils all the way down to how determined you're, how a lot you prepare, and how instantly you p.c.. issues up. My suggestion could be to get a tutorial e book or DVD and study some chords. in case you do it on your own you'll keep an outstanding style of money and also you'll go at your own p.c... Guitar classes aren't any further less costly lately, till you comprehend someone. only supply it a shot on your own for a month or 2 and note the way you progression. Then in case you sense you want classes to get better positive, then detect a reliable instructor that should not be too severe priced. despite the indisputable fact that the secret is to coach....prepare.....prepare! reliable success!

Bit of both really. Ive pulled out some great solo's with a handfull of notes and bummed out with a fistfull. If the music needs a bit of a chop, then do it. If you want to express sorrow and heartache, dont. Its all to do with context buddy. Oh and those who cant shred often question the validity of those who can. Just natural.
Being able to do something puts you in the place of not HAVING to do it. That can make a big impact on your music. Dont give up trying to learn though, cos its all finger exercises and mental stamina training.
Oh by the way..... drugs are ok if you rock hard enough..
Kindest Regards

As I understand it, guitar shredding is simply a reference to a particular style of guitar playing where advanced technique is prized (not in itself a different technique). I presume we're talking Joe Satriani, Steve Vai, Zakk whatever his name is here...... well, people seem to like it and while 16 year old boys have money to spend, players will make money from it, so in the end that's all that matters, I guess.....

In certain instances, yes, it's an ego trip (see Yngwie Malmstein's back catalogue - he was rumoured to be able to play 16 notes per second, but couldn't write a song to save his life) but technique in the right hands can be a joy to listen to. Joe Satriani's albums are very listenable, even to the non-musician, even though he is a virtuoso. It depends on the individual musicians ability to use their ability to construct memorable hooks and melodies.

Ive been into metal/rock since a kid and if theres one thing that grates on me like razors through flesh its what I call the Widdling.
Theres no showmanship coz I know genius guitarists who never need to shred as you call it.
It is just ego and it needs killing coz its past its sell by date.

Depends who's doing it and how.. If Tony McAlpine/ Scott Henderson/ Al Di Meola etc. plays a truly wild solo, GREAT. If it's some snot-nosed little punk that knows a couple of power chords and does the one-finger Captain Fastfret thing, YEEUGH. Kill me now.
