the way i see it is that the words "we didn't start the fire......it was always burning just the worlds been turning....." basically states that although we live in a blinkered society that believes that all is good, somewhere something is going wrong.
If the fire has already been lit by previous generations, who say for example invented the weaponry we use today or started an argument over a plot of land, the fire may have burned lower and in some cases nearly out, but at some point this generation has fanned the flames and kept it going.
" and when we are gone.........it will still burn on........"
so, the futures bright then.

"We Did Not Start The Fire" is a timeless Joel classic: it's lyrics can be applied to today, just as they were back when he recorded it ( one only need to change the names he mentions ).
Hmmmm......maybe Billy Joel needs to record a "sequel" of his hit song for today's current events.
