Parkinson's disease is a neurodegenerative condition (affects the nerves and causes degeneration) more common among the elderly. It can be primary (just happen) or secondary (happen because of some other disease or drug or something).

The actual problem in parkinson's disease is that a part of the brain called the "Basal Ganglia" (a collection of nerve cells at the bottom part of the brain) there are some specialized nerve cells to do with movement. These cells are damaged or depleted somehow and cause certain (predicatable) movement problems: tremor, slowness of movement, mask-like face, difficulty starting to walk or stopping walking, or turning...

There's a fascinating bit of history where a group of Californian Uni students decided to try and synthesize pethidine. Unfortunately their QC procedures were a little lacking and they exposed themselves to a poison: 1-methyl-4-phenyl-1,2,3,6-tetrahydropyridine (MPTP)
This gave them a drug induced parkinson's disease.
