Is important if you are going after:
a) the last few percentage improvement in speed for accessing a file
b) the last few percentage improvement in the lifespan of your hard disk
I don't think it *really* matters for home personal use of computer. But if I have nothing else to do and feels good that my hard disk has to work a little less harder, I would do a defrag.

Darling defrags mention of media important because it is like clutter house. Honey would you live in untidiness if you do how would you go about wherever you want to go? It will be difficult to move about in house if it is untidiness and chaos.
Now it way it takes longer time to find right data from your hard-drive if your drive is untidiness and chaos. Meaning files are everywhere. With DEFRAGING your hard-drive what you really doing is putting all the file in order just like your house cleaning.

Think of a Harddisk as a big stock room. If you set up your stock in an orderly manner by numbers or alphabetized it is easier to find things. The same with a defragmented harddisk. this way files are not split up (fragmented) but kept in one piece. With a defragmented harddisk it has not to "run arround" to find data, thus increasing speed (reading/writing data to harddrive)
