I agree with number 1 but would add to that. I'd make 2 holes on each top end of the 2 x and pull the rope through, still fixing it to itself once it's through. This "ROPE triangle" should in effect cause the seat to be better balanced and more stable.

If you're NOT talking about a tree swing, but a GLIDER instead, the effort may be more extensive than purchasing one.

BTW, for a tree swing you can certainly use a tire, as well as a plank.

if you are talking about the wood tree swing it is simple get a piece of 2x8 and cut it about 24 inches long, then on both ends about 2 inches in from the end and centered, drill a hole just big enough to fit your rope through , put rope through hole and tie a knot in it,do this to both sides then tie other ends of rope to tree branch.
