Increases to minimum wage are often necessary to catch up to inflation. There are many indicators looked at, such as the tax bracket that a full-time minimum wage worker falls into. At just $11,000, one would be considered BELOW the poverty line if supporting a family.
The argument that it hurts the economy is not a fair assessment. It can have some negative effects at first as the market adjusts. However, the amount of positive impact it has to counter inflation is enough to balance it out in the long run. The economy can sustain itself from any kind of increase if it is done at a time when unemployment is low, housing sector is strong, and GDP earnings are high. Now is a good time to meet all those requirements so that the impact from the change is minimal...

In general raising the minimum wage is a bad idea for the economy, designed to get votes. The same people that call for high wages in the US complain when business moves abroad to take advantage of lower pay.
Artificially high wages also create unemployment by restricting the amount of people a business can afford to hire without going bankrupt.
After all, high wages aren't much good if the businesses paying them can't survive.
However, in the US the large amount of illegal immigrants is keeping the wage rate lower than the market rate. If illegal immigration can't be curtailed, employers must be prevented from hiring them. Then the minimum wage paid should rise and fall with the market.

Bush and gang like to brag on how great the economy is done for the country. But when it comes to support of minimum wage they tie to bill to aid the rich. Yes it needs to be raised.

yes i do have you ever tried to raise a family on the 6.50 an hour when gas alone now is at or over 3 bucks a gallon. it should be 10.00 an hour. by not raising it the government the working poor are just getting poorer. by raising it we could also get a lot of people off of welfare. given the opportunity to earn more would give people the motivation to get off there butts and get a job
