This is why it's a very good idea to have on record a highly detailed photo inventory of your valued belongings; something you can hand a copy of to police for investigative help.
It's not the police don't really care about what happened to you; it's sadly (and espicially true in major cities) the fact they have more serious crimes to focus on--and they're overloaded with such cases.
I was robbed and a SLR camera I valued was taken from me. I gave police a detailed descrip of the item. Six years went by and one day, by chance, I found the camera in a pawn shop!!
I drove by the police station, where they gave me a photo copy of my report. I showed that to the pawnshop owner, who not only gave me my camera, but gave me the info on who pawned it!!! I was all too happy to hand this information over to the police, who paid the guy a surprise visit---and found he had in his house, over $100k in stolen items!!!
The story made TV news and the cop who made the bust got promoted to detectives--and became a grateful friend of mine to this day (he's the assistant police chief now).

I'm sorry to hear that, I was robbed 2 years ago and the cops wouldn't do anything for us either. We searched pawn shops, but I was told by a pawn shop owner go to the pawn shops and look don't tell them you were robbed and don't call and ask if anybody has brought in certain items, because they will put them back because they don't want to be involved. If you do see your items there call the police and they will come and try to find out who did it when they get there. Unfortunately we did not find any of our stuff and we lost our security feeling in our home. Good Luck....

If the cops won't help and you are scared of your suspects you can't do much.
Ask THEM for help. Like "Hey XY, you know, somebody stole my this-and-that. I know you to be a clever guy. Can you please help me to get the stuff back? This was important to me. I might even pay a small finders fee."
Keep the finders fee below the actual value of the stuff and you reduce the amount of your losses.
Or you might get punched into the face... Who knows.

Oh, do I know how you feel. You most likely will not get your things back, and I know, the police are less than helpful. It sucks! If you think its someone you know, watch and wait. Don't tell them you suspect them because they'll get rid of everything. If you be quiet, maybe you can catch them with something.

I know its tough to lose money or belongings to someone you know. Its the same if you lend a friend some money and never see he/she again. Anyway, the solution is forget it and move on with your life. Who knows what might happen along the way?
