If the question is referring to resolution standards(ie 800x600) of displays

then the answer would be- it depends.

Depends on actual VDT(video display unit), the capabilities of your video
hardware(on board or daughter board?) and its software.

Warning: forcing a video size NOT supported can permanently damage
some displays/equipment..
