should be 16" on center ( oc) but they can be 19.2" oc or 24" oc,
but in 65 there were no building inspectors in many areas of the country......and/or u might have a builder/homeowner that didnt understand and just did what he wanted.......

Most walls are 16 inches but the code only states you to put the studs every 24 inches. My house has it every 24. I'm a contractor in Kansas city. I always thought they were supposed to be 16 but its just not true. Some homes are 24 just like mine.

The standard has been 16" on center since before I was born. I was born in 1962 (that's right I'm old enough to fart dust ;)
Get a stud finder (they are pretty cheap these days) and then you won't have a doubt

walls normally 16 in on center floors the same in a home you can cut corners in a garage with 24 ioc in the roof still 16ioc in the walls
