Its a window regulator. WIckedly, horribly common problem on the Mk3 volkswagens. I know people that have gone through as many as 7 of them. If youre handy you can get it done (2 sets of hands advised) for about 250 bucks with the parts bought online. If youre not handy, any mechanic can do the job.
lemme guess, it started out working, but ground a bit, then it kept doing it and got worse, and at times it would get stuck in position, then finally it just quit on you, right? most likely in a half open position.
window regs are a mofo on those cars.

I would agree with the first poster. You have bad window regulators. It happened my Passat and my A6 just as you describe. This seems to be a known issue with VWs (and Audis as well).

Most car window motors are a two wire system, one wire positive and one negative. You can take two wires from your battery and touch them to the motors to see if they operate. If they do then look at the switch, you can go to a salvage yard and find a replacement switch very cheap.
