most of the european names were based on jobs people had, Baxter and Baker both mean the person was a baker who made bread. Miller was the person who ground grain into flour, Wainright was a man who made waggons, also Wagner, waggoner, are versions of that . also the color names often had to do with appearance, white hair, black hair, red hair, first names, are more a matter of personal choice and they do have meanings, Donald, a good scottish name, means Dark Warrior., you can look these things up in baby name books from the west.

Family names usually come from professions (Smith, Taylor), adjectives (Black, White), places (York, France)... etc. and relating stuff.

Given names are also usually have a meaning coming from adjectives, but some of them are so old it's hard to fnd out.

Some names have religious meanings too, of course.
For example: Achim means "Yahve got up", Amadeus means "Love God!"

See the link below to find out the original meaning of given names.

With English names, the derivation of the name can be broadly sorted into five categories:

Occupation (Baker, Smith),
Descriptive (Brown, Young),
Location/Geographic feature (Hill, Rivers),
Aspiring trait/expression (Hope, Goodspeed)
and Ancestry.
