Most of them use spoons and forks. But if they have an important function, the entree is eaten with the right hand as a culture gesture.

See if you use a spoon right from your child till your death its well and good. But the chances are less for you to use a unique spoon.
But we indians we have our own way eating foods with our hand because we do not want to rely on spoons which are,of course, used by others. And so we take food with our hands. There is a proverb in the state of tamil nadu in india. Take a hand full of food and eat well only then the entire food will go to your body and you will become strong. The older people in india lived for more than 100 years just because of their physical work and food habits

Actually, other cultures other than India also use their hands for eating. In the Philippines, a lot of people also used to use their hands. In fact it is still a common practice especially in the rural areas.
It's probably the 1st way of eating EVERYONE used first since it is easy and convenient.
Cutlery gets its name from the term for a person skilled in making knives, a cutler. The Worshipful Company of Cutlers was one of the London livery companies, reflecting the importance of this trade in the Middle Ages.
Cutlery gained prominence during the Middle Ages. Among its most early widespread uses was in the 12th century, in the House of NemanjiÄ.
I guess that's why non-Western countries have a lesser regard for utensils!

Utensils for eating food haven't been around all that long. Man wasn't born with a knife and fork in his hand. It started out with a knife, making it easier to cut meat. Then they started sticking the meat with the knife and eating it that way. After a few cuts on the mouth, someone invented a fork, then spoons after that. We still have "finger foods" like fried chicken, sandwiches, hot dogs, hamburgers, relishes, etc. Some things are just finger lickin' good.

try it your food tastes really good if u eat it with your hands.it gives a personal touch to the food. it is our culture & way of living. though most of the houses have forks, spoons & knives , still we prefer our god given hands. no, it has nothing to do with washing the vessels or the cutlrery. because in india domesic helpers r plenty & cheap.it is just we love to use our hands for eating.
