I heard that its a ghost month for the chinese people here. Whats a ghost month?

Ghost month is definately not something to celebrate, but more like a worshipping to the Ghost.
It is a believe in Chinese society, where during this ghost month, the hell gate is wide open for all kinds of ghosts to be free to travel, including coming to the human world.
So, during these period, there have so many different kinds of tales, like some ghost go into his son/daugther dream, tell them the lottery number, what they wanted in hell... etc. Then his son/daughter will burn the things they wanted, like car, house, maid (all made from paper, but not cheap at all)
So, this last for 1 full month, and all ghosts go back before the hell gate is closed. However, this year 2006 is special, it got 2 ghost months (because of the way the chinese calendar is derieve).
During the ghost month, Chinese people tends not do any "good" event like wedding, buying new house or cars... they tends to delay it till the ghost month over or rush it before the ghost month begin. Cause, they perceive it as bad luck and no good, if it is done during the ghost month period.

A ghost month or ghost festival is celebrated on the 7th month of the lunar calendar. During this month, they believe ghosts and spirits from the underworld come and visit the earth. The believers usually offer prayers, burns 'hell money' and food. It is also believed that it is better to avoid certain activities during this month like swimming or even buying a new house.

Ghost months this year starts July 25 to end of Sept. So make sure u dont arrange to go to the beach, go under the knife (surgery), or do anything "adventurous" these couple of months. It is believed that during ghsot months, the ghosts are out there to pull anyone into their depths. so be extra careful....

I heard ghost month is a month long vacation time for ghost. Its a time where they will be release from their torture in HELL and visit the human world for food, wine and entertainment.....besides haunting and scaring the hell out of their relatives, friends and neighbors. This year there is a double celebration as HELL is going to be open twice for these poor ghost to travel....to our human world......rare occasion

only if you believe in that ghost month otherwise nothing will happen to you, i have had more than 40 ghost months but still in one piece and healthy n happy living

there called hungry ghosts, they are released from hell and the chinese offer them food, thats why they bring out food and then there are these candles? idk
