depends what you mean by sound. If by sound you mean basic survival, yes but it might become increasingly difficult with outsourcing, cost of living , gas , insurance cost, etc.. all on the rise. If by sound you meanliving comfortably, being able to buy a nice home in a decent neighborhood, fill it with everything that you really want or need and be able to easily afford whatever comes your way your chances are pretty slim unless you come accross a money making secret or develop something that everyone "thinks" they need. Higher education is pretty much neccessary to gain employment in high paying jobs that allow for the later style of living however anyone can go down to the DMV, pick up a CDL Manual study and get a commercial driver's license. Then you can get a good paying OTR job but you'd better not plan on having a family then because you'll never see them. Higher education increases your likelyhood of earning a higher wage.

i dont think it is necessary... i see ppl all around who have happy lifes that did not attend college. i believe a higher education is just a path taken to have reassurance for attaining the means of living... you can always get into a trade like plumbing, hvac technician or sumthing... they make good money. but having a sound life doesnt necessary mean you to have a lot of money.. my logic is that as long as you happy with what u are doing... then it sounds to me that ur life is sound... for me it is to have a family of my own

I don't know what you mean by a sound life, and no one answer is correct. But i can tell you that without either a degree or some sort of specialized training, you are doomed to accepting lower paying jobs and/or always being passed over for promotions in favor of people who have what it takes. I also know that your earning potential over your lifetime will be sharply increased if you do have a degree.
