Reporter genes are genes that are placed under control of a native plant promoter, a stretch of DNA which determines when and where a gene is expressed. Thus, the "reporter gene" is used to study the timing and location of expression the gene that promoter normally controls. The reporter protein is usually something that is easily seen, like it could be the firefly luciferase which glows in the dark, or GFP (green fluorescent protein), a jellyfish protein which glows green (or yellow or red depending on the variety of GFP used) when a certain wavelength of light is shined upon it.
