I learned to drive in the army during WW2 on a 10 ton truck with five forward shifts, two reverse shifts and double clutch with each shift. The road was a steep mountain road in southern Italy. When I came home after the war I got my driver's license in about 5 minutes.

I passed the first time. I think the test is harder now though on the driving part. My two oldest kids failed the first time but passed on the second. My son was failed because the tester said he didn't pull up far enough to be able to see when making a right hand turn. My son was already over 6 ft., at age 16 and the lady tester was short so my son could see even though she couldn't. The 2nd time, he got a tall man for a tester. My 3rd and 4th children got their licenses on the 1st try, but with only one point to spare. My 4th child kept getting marked off for not turning his head enough when turning. Like his brother, he is also over 6 ft., plus he has 20/15 vision so he could see things easier than the tester. They just don't take such things into account!

I had to take the written test twice (I failed it by one question!!!)
I passed the driving portion of the test with flying colors the first time. I ended up having to take it a second time because (like a dingbat) I let my license lapse and after a certain amount of time they make you retake the stupid test. I passed it that time, too.

hopefully next time.
In my first attempt, the examiner almost had a hard attack because I didn't feel like stopping on a red light.
In my second attempt, I forgot my glasses and could barely see the road.
In my third attempt, I almost ran over an old lady crossing the street.
This is killing my self-confidence....
