Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP) is a method used to transfer or convey information on the World Wide Web. It is a patented open internet protocol whose original purpose was to provide a way to publish and receive HTML pages.
HTTP is a request/response protocol between clients and servers. The originating client, such as a web browser, spider, or other end-user tool, is referred to as the user agent. The destination server, which stores or creates resources such as HTML files and images, is called the origin server. In between the user agent and origin server may be several intermediaries, such as proxies, gateways, and tunnels.
An HTTP client initiates a request by establishing a Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) connection to a particular port on a remote host (port 80 by default; see List of TCP and UDP port numbers). An HTTP server listening on that port waits for the client to send a request message.
Upon receiving the request, the server sends back a status line, such as "HTTP/1.1 200 OK", and a message of its own, the body of which is perhaps the requested file, an error message, or some other information.
Resources to be accessed by HTTP are identified using Uniform Resource Identifiers (URIs) (or, more specifically, URLs) using the http: or https URI schemes.
hope this helps

Hyper Text Transfer Protocol.
Think of it as the language web pages use.
TCP/IP is the transport, the road if you will. Along this road travels HTTP for web, FTP for file transfers, HTTPS for secure web pages and many more protocols.
Each protocol has its benefits and pitfalls. FTP is great for transfering files as it is very robust, however its a little too big to use for web pages, HTTP is a very simple protocol mainly designed for transfering the text of pages and it does a good job of it too.
A protocol is a language. Like we all live on the same earth but speak different languages. The same goes for the world of networking.

Hyper Text Transfer Protocol - hypertext being the links that you see in text passages. Its an RFC (Request for Comment) and the fundamental protocol for the World-Wide-Web.

It stands for Hyper Text Transfer Protocol.
Basically when Internet evolved, there was a need to establish rules (read protocol) which every computer connected to the Internet should follow for effective communication and exchange of data between them.
HTTP protocol is just one of the protocol in which data traveling is un-secured in the sense that data cab be intercepted on its way to the destination computer a process called sniffing or phishing (a form of criminal activity).
To secure information/data transmitted between two computers, another secure protocol - https:// was developed, where "s" stands for "Secure". You are required to install SSL (Secured Socket Layer) Certificate on your server to provide secure data transmission.

HyperText Transfer Protocol.
The "HTTP://" tells your computer how to display the information it receives from a website, i.e. as a web page in a browser...
"HTTPS://" means that the web page is transmitted to your browser using encryption...
