It's like watching any talent show, and a hell of a lot better than the kind you will find at a high school or -- worse yet -- a church.
We suffer in this country from high production value expectations, and American Idol delivers. It's cute good fun, and naturally nobody actually believes that a mega-star will come out of the process, just someone who will be a willing slave to the music industry.
Simon Cowell put it well when he critcized Chris Doughtry for doing hard metal on the show and in effect, was presenting himself as a rebel. He stated that the band he was imitating wouldn't be caught dead on AI, and he was right.
It's mainstream family fun, and in that regard not even an accurate portrayal of what's on American Top 40 Radio.
Still, it's a fun distraction for a couple months a year...

I'm 54 and I like the show and look forward to each season starting. I have followed every season thus far! I really don't care what anyone thinks of that!!

I don't. People get too caught up in foolishness.
I don't watch that big brother crap either.
Actually, I don't watch much tv anymore. It is pretty boring.
