From what we have been told she is 37 weeks . Anyway the results say the babies lungs are not mature enough yet . I thought the babies lungs were well developed at this stage in pregnancy ??? This is driving my daughter crazy she thinks something has to be wrong ??? PLEASE someone let us know what is going on ... Thank you Lena

My daughter was born 4 wks early. Dr. said her lungs were developed, but a boys lungs develop last and if she had been a boy, he'd have to be hooked to all those machines. Is she having a boy?

The lungs are well developed, but there is a particular substance that coats the lungs once fully mature. When this substance, I believe it's called suffactant or something, fully coats the sacs of the lungs something is secreted into the amniotic fluid, which the doctors look for. Usually the lungs are fully coated by 38 weeks or so, though can sometimes be a little later. Some say that something about what's released into the amniotic fluid when the lungs are mature is what causes labor at term.

More than likely, the doctor is just being cautious. My baby was born at 35 weeks, and he needed oxygen and respitory aid for the first few days of his life. So it's very possible that at 37 weeks, the baby's lungs aren't quite developed. At least not to the extent the doctors would like. Doctors are very cautious about these things nowadays, because they don't want to be sued.

Nothing's wrong with the baby. If there were, the doctor would be the first to tell your daughter.

Tell your daughter to just relax, and that her baby is fine. The longer her baby stays in there, the healthier that baby will be. :o)

They do say that after 37 weeks a baby is considered full term, but they also say every pregnancy is different, and it is also possible that your daughter's due date is off a week or two.

I agree the doctor is probably just being very cautious. It is optional, after all to induce, so no way will he or she induce unless everything is just so. He has to cover his *ss. For the same reason, he CANNOT withhold any information from your daughter. So if he hasn't said anything to her, he is not worried about the situation. However, she should certainly ask if only to allay her fears. My dad is a retired OB and so I ask him my questions first because I don't want to bother my doctor. He ALWAYS tells me to call the doctor if I have concerns. That's their job.

At 38 weeks it is safe to deliver the baby...the due dat may be off by a week or so. Tell her to relax..getting all stressed isn't good for her or baby. All the baby does after 38 weeks is put on weight.
