If you in Australia, its the 1st August!
United States 1st January.
It's all to do with the breeding season...they breed in Spring preferably - especially thoroughbreds

In Australia's horse racing industry the first of August is the horses birthday...

It never quie makes sense to me because it means that a horse born just before that date is then considered one year old on the first of augst even though only a few weeks old...

but to be fair most horses in that industry are mated at such a time that the foals will be born in the spring.... after august..

January 1st.
This is mainly for racehorses though. For other horses it doesn't really matter and you can just go by the day they were born on.
