It goes back to a male rite of passage called 'The Dozens' where young males try to out insult one another... a popular tactic would be to insult not only your opponent but his family as well, and the mother of any family is the most revered, and therefore the best target of gross insult. It has just evolved from there into "Yo Mamma" jokes.

I think it is because that is where it is likely to hurt the person more when in a verbal fight. As far as jokes, i don't know. I think those jokes are kind of out there for peopel to read and use them on each other. I mean most people feel for their mothers and care for their mothers and would hate to see any harm come to them because they tend to be your initial care taker/giver and you form this bond with them, insulting you by insulting your mother... well that just kinda sucks. I know i was always teased for having a thai mother living in a south texas city. I hated it and it hurt my feels pretty bad!
