It's getting rid of all of your bad feelings. In Shakespeare though he could have actually saying like removal of toxins from the body (like being sick could be kathartic) it's pretty much the same thing as cathartic in this day. releasing toxic substances from you thoughts, your heart etc
I find a really good cry is kathartic to me (I can let go, and move on)

Catharsis is a greek word used to descibe the emotional purging felt having watched an emotional piece of theatre. For example, though you watch a tragedy, and are emotionally involved with the pain and suffering of the characters to the extent of feeling personal anguish, after the play has been resolved you should experience a feeling of release and upliftment, having rid your body of these emotions. This experience of physically purging yourself of distressing emotions is Catharsis, or Katharsis.
