Does anyone remember the rock radio station KNAC? They were out of L.A.? There hasn't been a good rock station in L.A. since. What do you think? if you remember KNAC, do you remember the Long Beach chile cook off and all of the great bands KNAC had there.

There were two incarnations of KNAC - the older one was called "Rock n' Rhythm 105.5" and the later, more famous one was "Pure Rock 105.5." I still have a pin from the old KNAC somewhere (in classic new wave pink and black). The original KNAC was more of a competitor to KROQ, playing a lot of punk and new wave before they switched over to an all-metal format sometime in the mid- to late eighties. My neighbor's family was associated with the station in some way - someone once told me they were the owners, but I can't be sure anymore. I do recall her last name was Marconi, and she did claim to be related to Guglielmo Marconi, who invented the radio.

Their bumper stickers (the "Pure Rock" ones) were so ubiquitous that one was even shown worldwide pasted to an M1-A1 Abrams tank in the first Gulf War.

I remember KNAC from the mid to late 80's. Then I moved to Ventura county and couldn't get it anymore. Another radio station broadcast on the same frequency . KNAC rocked. I'm sorry to hear they no longer exist. I didn't know. They played all the hard stuff KLOS wouldn't play. KLSX was into all modern stuff then. The short-lived Pirate Radio was also in LA at the time. If I remember correctly, KNAC was actually out of Long Beach. Them may have had a studio in LA. A lot of radio stations do that. I wasn't at the chili cook-off, but I'm sure it was fun.

KNAC was gone a long time ago but was awesome. There was a station out of San Diego or something like that that was pretty decent and played older metal stuff and newer stuff too but I don't remember the name of it. KROQ is basically all there is and that station went crap long ago.
