Well, if my maths are correct this fella who appears would have a vessel capable of containing five people - himself, me and three out of my four companions.
There are five people in my party; myself and four companions.
So why not throw the other fella overboard and sail away with all my party on board? The idiot who tried to rescue us can feed the sharks :oP

Suddenly a man appears? I hope he has a boat or something and is not just swimming or in another raft.
I'd suggest that we ask for a volunteer to stay behind. If no one else volunteered then I would. Whatever four people went with the "man" could then rush to some source of communication (if possible) to send help back for the remaining friend. Maybe the "man" has some spare food and/or water he could leave behind with the stranded friend.

If we are in the middle of the ocean ...and "suddenly a man appears....."----It might very well be a test of one's faith.
Anyone who 'could appear' out of nowhere in the ocean's middle, could probably have the ability to save everyone involved in the incident? I'd make an appeal for the safety of all, including "Him" and see what happens?

I'd let myself stay behind then I'd hang on the end of the raft and kick, half swimming with the raft as a flotation device while I follow the boat. Or I'll choose the friend of mine that's the fastest swimmer and tell them to do that. While, y'know, I ride on the boat of a stranger that wants one of my friends to die?

well, I am assuming that the man that wants to save us has a boat, but alittle one, so he can't take all of us, so I would kill the man and steal his boat so all our friends get to safety.
Unless the man to which you refer actually appears out of thin air, like a ginii from a lamp, and is offering to magically transport most of us to safety, in which case I would assume I am halucinating and in advanced stages of exposure and at deaths door, so I would send the others assuming that I would be soon dead anyway.

If I were righteous enough I'd say that I'd stay behind and let my three friends go, otherwise I would be acting selfishly if I saved myself.

No way that I'll not sacrifice any of them. I'll sacrifice myself instead and tell them to live their lives as happy as they can for many reasons:
first of all, there's nothing in the world is worth being sad.
second, I sacrificed myself for their sake and hope them happiness.
last but not least, to have my answer be voted as best one.

I would gladly sacrifice my best friend. She is sitting right here and I hate that she is funnier than me. So I am going to have to say Nicole. She will stay.
