I'm talking about the play, not the movie, actually to be honest, I don't really like the movie, play is much better.

It was not based on a book. It was a play written by Oscar and Hammerstein based on a play written by Lynn Riggs "Green Grows the Lilacs" (first performed in 1931).

Oklahoma! was performed on Broadway in 1943.

Perhaps...

But, according to the Movie Database, the actual writing credit goes to Lynn Riggs, from a play she wrote called "Green Grow the Lilacs".

Lynn Riggs may have had an idea from a book she'd read, but that's just speculation.

Hope that helps! ;)
