Wow, I'm here in Harris County myself...
I said once in Orlando that I thought it was cool that when one Texan says to another Texan "over yonder" that it seems almost like telepathy that the other Texan knows exactly what the other one is talking about!!! Then this uptight priss said "You really say that???" And I said, well informally, to our friends and stuff, yes of course, it's like a joke most of the time. She looked disgusted, but heck she is from Florida, at least we in Texas have figured out how to count votes!!! (J/K to all non-bigoted Floridians!)
Here in Clear Lake we have cattle grazing near a retention pond behind Home Depot so there are some cliches. But we aren't backward and we don't ride horses to work or any of that BS, if we did the rest of the country would be totally jealous of us missing out on the high gas prices. There is so much money and political power and largesse in Texas that if someone wants to trash us then they can just wait til our next (hopefully sane) Texan president is elected because it WILL happen. They can patronize our corporations every day they spend any money. They envy our beautiful beaches and wilderness.
I went to NYC and everything I was asked had to do with NASA or the Galveston hurricane. When I talked about how I live on a full fifth of an acre in an average neighborhood people were thunderstruck by the fact that my husband mows the lawn for over an hour...Houston rules!!!! Not being able to walk down a street without choking on diesel, living in a shoebox apartment smaller than my dorm room in college, why would I worry about what these people think if they are worried about the very farms that feed them? They live in their own forms of craziness I'd say are about equal to our own.
They aren't trashing us as the rednecks anyway, not that I can tell. They save that for Arkansas and stuff where they can make disgusting inbred jokes. While I am proud of my state, I would never really hate on any group of people based on where they live unless they made derisive comments about my state's culture.

If you get outside of Houston you will see that we are huge in the farming and ranching business. The King Ranch is larger than the state of Rhode Island.
We don't have accents. Only people from Minnesota and Michigan have accents. And Cajuns, when they're really angry.

As well as the other answers, yes it's all because of movies.
But we say y'all, other states say, you guys. That is even when there are girls around. Ex.- Do you guys want to go to the mall?
I sure would rather say y'all .
