Primary purpose of MP3 player is subscription capability... Ipods are sleek, slim, beautiful.... yet they don't have compatibility with ANY subscription music sites, if I understand correctly. What gives?

If you're set on the iPod, just import your mp3 collection to the iPod library. Download it from the Apple site and give it a try with the mp3's you've already got.
I can't think of any reason to buy an iPod over a Creative model. Some of the Creative models aren't great, some are fantastic. iPods are just trendy (and expensive).

True enough but Ipod has its own music store and the music sells there for the same price as other sites I have seen.

It comes down to what Mp3 player you like really.
