mahatma gandhi

gandhi - is title or surname, means nothing ,, just a name

mahatma - is an honoured title

meaning 'great soul'

(his real name is > mohandas karamchand gandhi)

lemme give u sanskrit break-up too
mahatma is derived from,
mahan (great) + atma (soul) = mahatma
hence a mahan atma makes a mahatma
