The reason so many in Bay St. Louis/Waveland, Ms. did not evacuate is that, if their property did not flood in the horrific Hurricane Camille, they remained behind for various reasons-one reason was to protect their homes from looting. Looters even come from other states to loot; ie. they must consider it a job opportunity. A friend there said "Queen Camille killed more people in Bay St. Louis/Waveland in 2005 than she did in the 1960s! Some people there are still living in tents on their house slabs because it is nearly impossible to find anyone to work. If it had not been for church groups, various organizations, and illegal aliens, there would not have been any progress much at all. According to the historian Douglas Brinkley in his new book "The Great Deluge" the devastation was even worse in BSL/Waveland because our town was immediately on the side of the storm where the winds were the worse. This disaster shows to the world that we are vulnerable to any sort of threat.

OMG...someone who knows what it's like!!!!!! And you're right...the Sun Herald posted that and I've used that with a lot of people...Camille DID kill more people in 2005 than she did in 2006...why? because if Camille didn't do it...NO ONE ELSE WILL! I do hope that if anyone takes any lesson from this storm it's this....don't judge the next one on the one before it...there will always be bigger bad asses!! In 30 years there will be another Katrina.

Since you're from the Bay...I'm in Long Beach...I must say this...remember when Camille was the talk of the town? Remember when everyone talked about how bad Camille was...I don't think we're ever gonna mention her again are we? lol

I also think it's wrong the way people who didn't have flood insurance are being treated...they didn't take it because their agents didn't offer it. Insurance agents are like lawyers or accountants...we do what they say because it's their job. They know what they're talking about. And then they just dump them off when their homes are destroyed! I have a lot of relatives who lost their homes and MANY MANY friends who did too. We were fortunate with major roof damage and ceiling damage...no flooding. The value of our house went way up! lol

The looting was sad! My parents were at my aunt's house trying to help them go their stuff (8 ft of water) and some stupid woman drove by while they were putting stuff on the side of the road for garbage and asked if she could have some of their old things...vases, etc. How dare people!!!!

As for the next storm...we're gonna be ready. We weren't entirely ready for this one and look at how Mississippi handled it...with flying colors! :) We are already back up and moving! I'm really proud to be a Mississippian! :)

Here is what I think.. tuff luck.. I don't think the government should have given them ANY MONEY.. I mean geez.. if a tornado strikes a house in the midwest and the people do not have ANY insurance.. do you think the government is going to send them ANY MONEY? If you do you are on crack.. Same thing.. a natural disaster I think everyone that got money needs to pay it back in 3 months. Some of the survivors STILL live in hotels and we (taxpayers) are footing the bill... They need to get off their lazy A$$es and start working.. any job would be better than collecting welfare.. where is their pride?

Some of the ones here in Texas still thinks everything should be handed to them just because the are from New Orleans. It has been almost a year and time to get on with their live. They are still on medicaid and wanting handouts. The crime rate is this town has gone up and most of the time it is a Katrina Evacuee.

Ya know, here's the deal. I know several who went through Katrina. I was on the edge of it. If you didn't evacuate you are an IDIOT. If you haven't gotten off your fat as* and gotten a JOB then you are a MORON. At this point, if they've made no real effort, they don't deserve any help. Also, everyone knew a WEEK ahead of time that it was coming....so don't even say there wasn't enough time. There was plenty.

just because it has been a year, these people are not going to heal up that fast, it will be for life with them.

now i have met some people who are a victim of Katrina, and they are trying to do their best in getting a job, and building a new home. they lost a lot in that storm. their family history in photos, and personal items which have been in the family for generations.

if they are trying to build themselves back to meet their own needs, i am very proud of them. but if they don't want to help themselves, they are bringing that on themselves.

I still feel sad for them. They all suffered unnecessarily. The govt was fully aware of the impending hurricane, but, yet did nothing to help evacuate.
