Sioux Falls, SD is the best place to live in the U.S. It has been voted the #1 city to live in several times and is usually at least in the top 10 every year in Money magazine. I was born and raised there and have always loved it for it's beautiful 4 seasons, the falls, lovely parks and bike trails that go all through the city. The city is big enough to have everything, but still small enough to enjoy. Sioux Falls takes pride in keeping their city very clean, having a low crime rate, good schools, hospitals and the unemployment is also consistently low. The population is around 145,000 which is a nice size without being too big or too small. We currently live in a much larger city in a different state because of my husband's job change and we hate dealing with the heavy traffic and the high crime rate. We would love to move back to South Dakota!
In Sioux Falls there is always something to do or some new restaurant to try. The shopping in Sioux Falls has as much to offer as a much larger city does. They have the largest one story mall in America! Also, the downtown is charming, inviting and a great place to spend the afternoon checking out all the interesting shops. Everytime I visit the downtown there is something new added in either shopping, dinning or the arts.
The Washington Pavillion of Arts and Science is also a fun and educational place for the entire family to enjoy. It is located in the downtown in my old historic high school, Washington High School. I was so excited when I heared the city had saved the beautiful building (pink quartsite) and redesigned the interior into something everyone could enjoy from the Performing Arts Center to the CineDome Theater to the Science Discovery Center.
Falls Park is also a great place to spend the day and one of my favorite places to enjoy in the city. We really love the soothing sounds and beauty of the falls, Sioux Falls' namesake. The park has taken on a total transformation since I was a small child in the 1970's. It has been updated and transformed into a landmark beauty! There is an Observation Tower that is five stories high and offers great views of the city and the falls (and an elevator!). The park also offers a gift shop and a new restaurant that recently opened in a historic pink quartsite building that overlooks the falls. There are scenic views from the walking paths and the wooden walking bridge that also overlook the falls. There is a free laser light show that is held in the evenings at the park, with the falls as a back drop, during the warm summer months. It is so relaxing to bring a blanket and sit out on the grass and enjoy the stars, the falls and the light show all in one evening with family and friends.
There is an awesome water park located on the edge of Sioux Falls called Wild Water West. The waterpark is also the backdrop to the biggest christian contemporary music festival in the U.S., that I know of. It is called LifeLight Music Festival. It takes place every Labor Day weekend and is free to attend! It always showcases the most popular christian music names todate! I believe last year there was over 100,000 people in attendence for the 3 day event from all over the US. You can pitch a tent or bring your camper and stay right there on the grounds if you don't want to get a hotel room. It is quite a spectacular event!
There are three more things I want to mention that are super to attend in Sioux Falls every year. One is the Parade of Lights held in the downtown area in the evening, the Friday after Thanksgiving. We always bring hot cocoa! It is a fun way to start off the Christmas season with family and friends. The other awesome (and free!) events that we love to checkout in Sioux Falls once a year are the huge Sidewalk Arts Festival and the JazzFest. The Sidewalk Arts Festival is held on a Saturday in September. The downtown streets are filled with over 50,000 people all enjoying the arts, crafts and delicious food. The large city we live in now has such a tiny sidewalk arts festival. We went once and never went to it again. We were really disappointed and couldn't believe that the much smaller city we are from has so many more free and fun events to attend that are truely enjoyable. The JazzFest is also a free event held one weekend in July, every summer. This year Bo Diddley, the Neville Brothers, Chris Botti and Los Lobos were there to perform for free, just to name a few. There is also delicious and interesting food booths to try at all of these events.
We love Sioux Falls, South Dakota and believe it is the best place to live and raise a family. It is also in the same state as the best places to go on vacation...Mt Rushmore, the Badlands and the black hills!

Central Oregon (Cities of, Madras, Terrebonne, Redmond, Bend, Sisters, La Pine etc...)

Central Oregon is one of the most picturesque places in our Country (ask me I have driven thousands of miles in our country). It is what is called - High Desert. Therefore it is very DRY (yep have tumbleweed and even dust devils once in a while) and can get very hot (Spent the last 2 weeks hovering around 100, and the highest it ever was outside was 105 at the airport and my house 108)!

The winters are cool, but mostly tolerable. They can be bitterly cold on occasion and one year I lived here we had -6F as a high temp and -12 or something like that as the low. But with the DRY weather (humidity is usually about 18% midday or less) this creates very dry snow that you can SWEEP away not heavy shovel snow. We usually get 2-4 inches when it snows, but have had times where it dumped 8 inches (that's an 8yr living here stat). Usually hangs around for a couple of days and the nice bright sun just melts it away.

It's sunny, we have very little rain in comparison to Portland, nor the traffic congestion etc.. And we have lots of farmers and the like out here in this country living area. I LOVE IT! We have no emissions testing out here, we have license plates that cost about $55 dollars every other year, and you are NOT allowed to pump your own gas (great for hot or cold days) and there is NO SALES tax :) Property taxes are a bit higher, but nothing like the East Coast OR California. I think it's the best deal around that is relatively unheard of. It must be getting news now, because it's more than DOUBLED in size in the 8 yrs I have lived here, and at some point in the last 8 years it was the fastest growing area in the country. I live in a town with 9500 people. When I first moved here it had about 4,000 tops. Another town had 9,000 when I moved here and it's about 25,000 now. :) It's growing and that's exciting but MUCH of it, is still rural and you can still live very quietly. I have lived in South Bend, Indiana (Awful winters), Seattle, Washington, Portland Oregon, Washingtonville, NY and I have to say, this is the best place yet :) Bend is the biggest city around with 70,000 people in it, so do some searching on the net about it. Got some GREAT Golf courses, outside recreation all year long--from rock climbing at the world renowned Smith Rock, to hiking on Mt. Bachelor or Mt. Hood, river rafting in the Deschutes River, to Skiing/Winter stuff on either of those mountains and the view of the greatest concentration of Mountains in the Cascade Mountain Range (from Northern Cali to Northern Washington State) right here in beautiful Central Oregon :) Come visit, Gamble a bit (yup we have several Native Reservations in the area too!) I'd bet you love it!

I would definitely have to say Wisconsin on the lake. First reason why Wisconsin in one of the lucky states that gets to experience all four seasons. We have 95 degree summers, and yes ice cold winters, then we have falls where its crisp and the beauty of the trees and various nature and wildlife around you is overwhelming then spring where there is a rebirth of nature, the flowers bloom, the animals run! It is a gorgeous area. Then you get to see the unmaterialistic lifestyle of Wisconsoners. We are not glitz and glam, just active hardworking individuals. Are streets arent lit up all night and we dont have skyscrapers...but it is breathless here.

You would really need to give more criteria. There are soooo many choices, but it depends a lot on what you want. There are sites on the web where you can answer a series of questions about what your criteria are, and it will give you a list of your top picks. The questions include issues such as weather, access to shows, access to museums, cost of living, taxes, transportation, educational facilities, access to sporting opportunities, safety, healthcare and healthy living, etc.

You really need to define those things to determine where is the best place for you.

In "God's Country" - far from the maddening crowd - out where the buffalo roam, where there are no Walmarts or cell phones, no crime or violence, where a person can plant a garden and eat its fruitage, where one can think in peace and quiet and sincerely praise the beauty of Jehovah God, the Almighty Creator of the universe. Ahhhhhhh.
