The best routes to take are to research the process of starting a business as well as the industry you're interested in.
I recommend checking out the SBA, Entrepreneur, The Start Up Journal & Nolo. All 4 are great informational resources for the new/small business owner. I posted links for you in the source box.
Research, research, research – this cannot be stressed enough. Read as much as you can. Here are some book titles that are relevant:
* Selling Online: How to Become a Successful E-Commerce Merchant by Jim Carroll, Rick Broadhead
* The Complete E-Commerce Book: Design, Build, and Maintain a Successful Web-Based Business by Janice Reynolds
* Intelligent Selling: The Art & Science of Selling Online by Ken Burke
* E-Commerce for Dummies by Don Jones
There are plenty of free informational resources out there. Check the source box for links to articles.
Hope that helps! I wish you much success & happiness in all your ventures!

The best way to start out, in my opinion, is opening an eBay Store. It's fairly inexpensive and will give you a good idea on what type of demand your inventory will generate. It also affords you a certain sense of safety because of all the security features eBay and Pay Pal offer. Not to mention...you can't beat the exposure! After awhile if you decide you would like to open your own website for e-commerce I would suggest Homestead. They have some really nice, affordable packages that are already equipped with a shopping cart. The customers who grew to love you on eBay will then follow you to your new web store. Take care and I hope you have an amazing evening!

First get a web domain name and then a site.
Go to the link below and at the bottom of the home page click on the flashing banner for starting a biz.
Here for a few bucks a month, less than $10, you can get your name and build your own site, along with setting up pay accounts, merchandising, site submissions, etc....
Next, go find the local UPS store and KINKO's and talk to the owner, not the clerk, tell him that you will be bringing him, steady, constant packaging and shipping business, give him an idea of average sizes of items and ask for discounted rates for shipping into the various regions. Then ask for that price chart in writing.
Now when you are pricing your items you will have a general idea of shipping and packaging charges in advance. Will make the sales go faster from your site.
