Not all Americans think this, and it's not intentional.

Many Americans think Delaware is a small European country, so don't take it personally.

Uh I do believe that Bangladesh was once part of India.I speak for myself and I can locate and name almost every country.I am still having some trouble with what used to be U.S.S.R. but that's ok.

Ok now that I'm done speaking for myself let me enlighten you a bit.I am a frustrated person due to the fact Americans generally don't give a crap except during election cycles. Most people take their public education and run with it.Although we do have public education it has been increasingly dumbed down over the years.Young American students are taught how to pass a test rather than actually taught.Free thinking is discouraged through these standardized tests because the teachers spend all the time in the classroom teaching to the test.Basically our government wants a bunch of mind numbed robots it can shout political slogans at and have us listen. They are aided by our countries consumptive mentality we buy crap we don't need, eat too much,to name a few things. The U.S.A. is so developed that alot of people see no need to care about the rest of the world. The only issue they care about are the ones that affect them like the price of gas.In a society where having a gas guzzling SUV is a status thing what do you honestly expect? Most of this country is lazy, uninformed, and apathetic on the issues of the day. It's a sad time for Americans.

With that said there are a few of us who do know these things.
There are a few of us who really do give a crap about this world.
So please don't think ill of us all ?

G'day Joycsharp,

Thanks for your question.

Americans have many wonderful qualities and the world would be poorer without them.

However, knowledge of world geography is not necessarily one of their strong points.

The National Geographic Society tested young Americans knowledge.

The survey included 510 people between the ages of 18 and 24 from all over the U.S. They were asked basic questions about world geography and current events using maps and other materials. The results were startling to some.

Ms. Bell adds, "Yes, young Americans had a hard time finding certain countries on a map or a region of the world. But what was more important, this (demonstrates) a lack of a functional knowledge. How do things relate together? What do you know about people who live in different parts of the world? And how does it impact back upon the United States?"

Despite the fact that the U.S. military has been in Iraq for more than three years, six out of ten young Americans couldn't find it on a map of the Middle East. And nine out of ten couldn't find Afghanistan on a map of Central Asia. "

Bangladesh is not as newsworthy so it has even bigger problems.

Lack of knowledge of geography is costing American companies. Microsoft launched geography programs to teach its employees about world geography.

"The company has now launched geography classes for its staff to avoid further bloomers which have caused embarrassment and cost money on a grand scale. He said that as a geographer himself it was depressing that Americans had a reputation for being particularly unaware of the rest of the world. The annual National Geographic Survey had thrown up the sad fact that only 23 out of 56 young Americans knew the whereabouts of the Pacific Ocean. "

It proved costly for Microsoft when "a colour-coded world map showing time zones, showed the disputed Jammu-Kashmir region as not being in India - an offence under Indian law. The mistake led to the whole of the Windows 95 operating system being banned in the country, losing large sales. For its replacement, Microsoft, Office 97, Microsoft removed the colour coding and sold 100,000 copies in India. "

As an Australian, I am occasionally thought to be an Austrian.

Regards

Nothing is wrong with them.

They do not know the fine divisions between different countries
in Southern Asia, like Pakistan, P.O.K.,India (including Kashmir)
Tibet, Nepal, Bangladesh. People resemble each other, specially
the wheatish complexion.

Similar is the case of China,Hongkong,Taiwan,Malaysia,Japan,
where again people have similar resemblance, like fair complexion & slanting eyes.

To further narrow down, in India, anybody South of Maharashtra
is called a MADRASI, irrespective of the States one hails from,
ie, Andhra Pradesh, TamilNadu, Karnataka & Kerala.Even the
Andaman Islanders & SriLankans are included. Almost similar
language,complexion, food habits(Rice) and dress(Lungis) are
the factors for his confusion.

Hence, only broadly speaking they include Bangladesh in India.

It'll be really nice of Mr.BUSH to handover Bangladesh to India,
as Bangladeshis are suffering politically, industrially, morally,
physically, thus giving in to terrorists from across the borders.
This inspite of being blessed by fertile lands, water, hardworking
& inteligent labour force.
working folks & other assets.

lol! I never thought about Bangladesh untill i appeared in this country and spent unforgettable 6 months in Dhaka, Mirpur. Your country is very promissing one, even it was shockative many ways.
I think that people in USA dont mix countries intentionally. They just think that USA is the whole world and no other localities are worth to pay any attention. I could live in Bangladesh, but i will never be able to live in USA. I had one online pal from USA, he thought that "Tagore" is the dish, the same as "Tandoori" and "Chapatti"!!!

I don't think they do it intentionally, because they really didn't know it.maybe their education system didn't focus much about international geography.

but don't be sad just because Bangladesh not popular. It's actually a challenge for bangladesh people to make their country become popular

i'm not an american

What do u expect from a nation that bombs the crap outta every country that disagrees with it, or labels individuals as terrorists just for having a different point of view?
I guess poor old Abe Lincoln would have been executed before becoming Presedent if the anti-terror laws were about in the 1850's.

i must say they are not that good at geography. besides, bangladesh is also too small to be ranked geographically. it is just like some of the Bangladeshis are not aware of the existence of countries like Latvia or Chad. i dont think it is anything intentional - pretending to not know a country will not get them anything, will it? and i will never believe if you say that all the americans are a bunch of snobs ..

Dude, most Americans wouldn't know night from day, let alone be able to spell Bangladesh.

I have been working in the school system for about a year and I am amazed at how little the kids I teach know about world geography let alone US geography. I don't know what they are being taught these days but it isn't the basic things I learned when I was in school.
