Space station is actually a place where astronaut rest and replenish their supply. Just like a supply depot. It serves a great deal when you are out in space and do not have supplies available. Besides that is also used as a launching pad for the aircraft that ported there. just like a car. Running on low fuel in the middle of the journey to mars is not something that you wan to happen to millions of dollar equipment.

Do you realize the computer you are using is a result of the space program, as is Teflon no stick pans, corning ware, all those synthetic lubricants, all the dry lubes and silicon.and the list is endless. Seriously we (the public) get so much out of the space program you simply wouldn't believe it.
As for the space station, only the future will tell.

lets see did you use a cell phone today..how about a satelite radio or TV..maybe you ar eusing a computer, possibly even a wireless one..GEE has space exploration done anything for us..what about kids who are good in scince, shouldnt they have somewhere to use their abilities....oh are they considered geeky to you and not important... I know why dont we just go back to using the old pencila nd paper to send mail, andmaybe the poney express..and while we are at it,lets get rid of fiber optics, and every other advancement
