Mars is currently 2.5 AU from the Earth and is currently receding from us.It will continue to get more distant for the next two months reaching a distance of about 2.6 AU before it will slowly begin to get closer to the Earth again.

You have however missed Mars's closest approach. This occurred almost 3 years ago on 27 August 2003 when Mars came as close to the Earth as it has ever done in almost 60000 years.

(NB 1 AU is the distance between the Earth and the Sun)

Last year or the year before Mars came closest to the Earth it had been it at least a century, and it is still very easy to find in the sky. Im guessing its starting to get farther away now rather than closer.

I don't know but apparently on August 27th, Mars will be nearer to the Earth than it has been for who knows how many years. It's seemingly the only chance we will have in our lifetimes to get as good a look at the red planet. Might be worth scanning the skies that night.
