i don't know anything about computers. can i get some help in extremely simple terms, as though i am an idiot?

unless they have Yahoo Messenger on their computer, you can not use if from their home.

If your friend has Yahoo messenger already on their computer you can log in using your ID. If not then you'll need to ask your friend if you can install it. It's simple the on screen instructions will guild you through.
If you install it the two of you can Yahoo back and forth whenever you like.

you are not an idiot.please dont call yourself that.maybe your friend doesnt have yahoo messenger installed on her computer.look at the top of answers.you will see my yahoo.once there,if you see your screen name there you are good,but if not log in.then look on the right hand side and scroll down until you see more or all yahoo,then on this page look for communication or yahoo messenger.once there download it and it will guide you thru the rest ok.once finished open it,log in and you are there.good luck.

If they dont have yahoo messenger (smiley on the right side bottom), download it on their machine from http://messenger.yahoo.com and sigin with your login.
Add them to your list too and enjoy!
