I definitely would not put this at 50 years out, although I do admire your imagination. Think about the problems computers have doing even simple tasks today! I can hardly go a week without my computer crashing and needing to be rebooted -- imagine what would happen if you had to restart your computer while your life was inside the computer?
There are other problems with this idea, such as the fact that computers do a poor job of reproducing natural phenomena. The area I'm studying at my university is computer processing of natural language, and we can't even get computers to understand simple conversations, much less reproduce entire human beings.
Keep thinking and imagining though, it's a good thing to keep alive in you.

I would say theoretically it is possible. There is an existential question, however. Are the cells destroyed when they are scanned? What if by some chance they aren't destroyed? Then there would be a duplicate of you at the other end of the portal, and you would still exist. Then the machine realizes its mistake and kills you. So is the person on the other end really you? Is this a transportation device or a copy-murder device?

What you are describing is a "Transporter" or "Star Gate"
Converting thing to a data or matter stream at the departure point and then returning them to their original form at the destination point.
50 year I think is a little optimistic. I think it will be closer to 100.

that's a very interesting hypothesis. Crossing artificial intelligence with humans. For example, the robots. But it's hard to fathom pile of screws and nuts having the intelligence w/out men. Acccepting cloning is more of a poss reality. But computers.?????????????????? We're talking about virtual reality, right.Computers to computers in a sort of three dimensional world. Something to think about. thanks.
