I have lived in Ahwatukee for 12 years and have seen it grow tremendously. Unfortunately, when you have a great area like Ahwatukee everyone wants to live there, and so it has become quite crowded - the schools in particular. There are some excellent private schools ($$$) and charter schools (free) in Ahwatukee. I can personally recommend Horizon Community Learning Center as an excellent charter school that offers grades K-12.
It is very family friendly and safe here. You will see people out every day walking, jogging and biking. Most communities have their own park and swimming pool. The city parks and pool are also very nice. The YMCA is excellent and offers tons of activities. There are dance studios, little kid gyms, preschools and places such as Tutor Time. There is a fun indoor play place called GameOn.
All the shopping and services you need can be found within the Ahwatukee-Foothills area.
We had a housing boom a couple of years ago, and the homes are now pretty expensive. My home has more than doubled in value in the last five years. If you can afford it, a home here is an excellent investment.
If you have to commute into town every day, I would not recommend this area. It is called "the world's largest cul-de-sac (not parking lot, as someone else said), and the mass exodus from the cul-de-sac every morning goes very slowly. If you don't have to get on I-10 every day during rush hour, no problem.
One of the best things about Ahwatukee is the sense of community. You will find some of the nicest people here who take pride in the community and work to keep it great.
I hope this helps. If I can answer any more questions, feel free to contact me.

Ahwatukee is an nicer upscale area of Phoenix, the area is pretty and there is alot of shopping close by. It is a bit pricey but most people would like it. I can't say anything about the schools but I do know there are alot of families in Awatukee.
Since I am just "lending" you this bit of info, I would like it back someday... HAHA!

I'd vote not. It's just another suburb of Phoenix. If you want something more family friendly, try the Tucson area, although that too is really big. Maybe Marana. Schools are a bit better, but overall, schools in AZ stink. That's why we're moving out of state. AZ is not really family friendly. Schools are the 2nd lowest in the nation. And crime rates are in the top 10 of the nation also

te kyrene scholl district is where the kids go to.. the distrcit is crowded and full of midlle class and rich kids. it had dance studios, gyms, roller skating rinks, pools and parsks: all close by. but is IS the world's largest parking lot... traffic is awful and house expensive.
