Does it make you uncomfortable when you see a female student wearing a short skirt and/or a low cut top? What about when a male student has his boxers hanging out? I'm going to be a teacher in about a year. Right now I work at JC Penney and I notice that a lot of young girls are dressing like well..you know. They have the tan going, jewelry, make-up, plucked eyebrows, legs shaved, short skirt, heels, and a skimpy tank. It is a little odd feeling when the child is dressing "hotter" than the adult figure. Of course a teacher should NEVER dress like that at school but please give me any comments. Tell me if you are male/female, what level you teach at, and any specific stories you have. Thanks

maybe I am also looking for...do you have problems with the students checking out other students because of "lack of clothing"? Does it cause a distraction?

I do a lot of volunteer work with the school. I am around kids of all ages all the time. I see many of them at schoo, after school and on weekends. I can tell you that these kids dress a lot more promiscuous off campus than on. In most districts, its intolerable.

Remember you are seeing these kids off campus. Many schools have strict dress codes and the students are prohibited from dressing in a way that could distract others from study. This includes, cleavage, short skirts, tube tops, mid sections, sagging pants, and even Tshirts that have inappropriate pictures on them.

I understand, especially if you are a new grad that you are almost in the peer group of these teens, however you are authority and you need to maintain that position at all times. Check with your school on the dress code and if you haven't gotten a job yet, maybe you should opt for a school that requires uniforms if it really bothers you.

Good Luck.

By the way. I am female, 26 years old and do volunteer work at all levels. I have many friends that teach at the high school level.

I think everyone has the right to wear whatever they want this is in my opinion covered by the freedom of speech the dress code at school has stopped me from wearing many band and political t-shirts and as for the girls maybe sometimes they could dress a little bit better but I'm sure when you where young you had you're own style of clothing that your parents and teachers didn't like but I do have to agree that teachers and parents should never dress like their kids especially if you are a girl there was a girl in my class in school last year and she had her mom working there she dressed just like her daughter and I will tell you it sometimes looked very messed up but anyways I think dress codes are stupid and everyone should be aloud to wear whatever they want.

Some schools are like a parade of the latest clothing styles. You are caught up at JCP with current styles. Your future job is not to be a fashion judge unless you are going to be a sewing teacher. If you think you will be distracted, look for a school with a conservative dress code or with a uniform policy. Very little time is spent on "What to wear?" Everyone wears the same thing and can give more time to learning. I have taught intermediate, upper grades and high school.

I was a teacher and the dress code kept getting more and more relaxed. Kids were forbidden to wear shirts with obscene slogans on them. As for the rest of it, every school has its own code. Make sure you know what it is. When in doubt check with another teacher or an administrator. Sometimes a kid will be sent home and told to change clothes.

Most dress codes at schools are strict and won't allow most of that.
