Actually, I think she's thinking of the Y as a (sometimes) vowel. As far as an unpopular noun, I can only guess that it's something we used to use and it's gone out of fashion. Like jalopy, another word for an old-time car.

And unpopular noun? I think "cancer." Most people don't like it. I'd say it is pretty unpopular.
