Call Centre industry is fast becoming a huge industry, if it isn't already one. A Call Centre job is as respectable as any other job. Many have made it a career where they started from being a Call Centre agent (a typical entry level) and have grown to become Call Centre Managers and more. In fact, not everyone can succeed in a Call Centre. You must have good communication skill, good inter-personal skill, good sales and service competencies. In essence, it is a more challenging job than many people describe it to be. Many have also mistaken a Call Centre job to be the traditional telephone operator job. It is not! In today's Call Centre, you have to be a solution provider. You have to be able to think on your feet. Make decisions. And recognise that you are responsible for making that call the last stop, and making that a special experience for the caller.

So if you think you are up to it, go for it. And if you like banking, most banks have Call Centres. Join one, if you can. You might just get the best of both worlds.

The rest is up to you.

Hope this helps.

Call center jobs are not all that bad if you are working for a department store like Target, BestBuy, Circuit City, Walmart and the like. These are commonly referred to as "customer service" jobs. They have flexible hours, and yes, you do get to sit down. However, they don't pay much, and your English speaking and writing skills need to be strong.

In contrast, telemarketing jobs are usually high pressure jobs. They are high rejection jobs; most people will either hang up on you or curse at you. You are expected to be able to set a certain number of appointments for the salespeople you are working for. If you are good at this type of thing, the pay is better. You get an hourly wage plus commissions at a lot of companies.

There are also independent companies that contract out for major companies like Verizon, AT&T, Mastercard, Visa, etc. These telemarketers are representing a particular company, depending on the lead sheets they are calling from at the time. These companies also pay a minimum wage plus commissions on all sales made.

The advantage to the above jobs is that they have flexible working hours which makes it easier if you are working on a graduate degree. And yes, you get to sit down.

When you get to the states, I suggest you check out the local classifieds in the paper for "telemarketers" and "customer service" positions.
