Hi Shan:
I started out as a sports writer, and it was a fascinating field. You can get a head start now, by writing for your school paper, and also for your local community newspaper. They are always short of people to cover local events, and would be happy to have someone cover a local sporting event for them. You may not get paid, but the experience would be great.
There are a few things you need to know:
Spelling is CRITICAL. Not only words like field, which you can pick up with a spell checker, but the correct spelling of players' names.
Timing is important. If the game is played on Saturday afternoon, the paper needs the report by Saturday evening. There is a saying in the newspaper world that yesterday's news is only good for wrapping fish. And it's true. People want to know right now!!!
Accuracy is important. Learn as much as you can about the game, know the rules, know the heavy hitters, and the record holders. You can find all this information by using your computer. It's great background to have and will help you write more interesting stories, as well as alerting you to what is important.
On a weekly newspaper (which many community papers are) you have a little more leeway, but check with the sport page editor, and find out what their deadlines are. Then ask if you can submit some sample stories, covering local high school games. If the editor says yes, get some back copies of the paper and read all the sports items, to get a feel for the style of the paper.
Then begin to write.
All your stories won't be published, but you're going to learn a lot by doing it.
Good luck with this!

It's a good field that probably won't make you a millionaire, but is fun and will pretty much assure you a steady job.
I would advise you to get very well grounded in sports and try and learn how to do radio play by play.
Remember you will have to be an expert in the popular sports and also the ones that are less popular. Learn how to be the best writer you can be, how to watch every kind of game and recognize all the players.
You might also give sports photography a whirl.

LOL that field comment is hilarious. I vote that for best answer. Anyway, if you want to get into writing, first write for your school newspaper. Do that until you graduate from HS and by then you'll have an idea of whether or not you want to stick with it. If you don't do well in high school, you won't have a prayer.
