Cars built after 1996 have a diagnostic system referred to as OBD-II (for On-Board Diagnostics - Generation 2). Part of the OBD-II standard requires that the ECU be able to maintain the trouble code even in the event of a power loss, so diconnecting the battery or shutting off the engine will not work.
That being said, the computer will erase some codes by itself (the loose gas cap is a good example, this comes up as an 'Evap system vacuum leak' code), if the car is started a few times once the problem has been corrected. Most codes, however, have to be reset using the proper OBD-II scan tool. Beware, if you erase a code without fixing the problem that caused the computer to flash the 'check engine' light, the code will just pop right back up. Go to your local Autozone, Pep Boys, Checker, etc., they can read the code for you for free as well as reset the light once the problem is fixed.
Just remember, just because there is not an apparent problem with the car does not mean there is nothing wrong. The computer is illuminating the 'check engine' light for a reason.

Something is or was wrong or it would not be on.
Sometimes it is only a glitch or a sensor has an invalid reading.
Usually it means that one of the sensors is bad, You might not notice this at first but it may cause more things to go bad.
You may be able to get the light off by pulling the fuse to the ecm or disconnecting the battery for a few minutes.
If there was a problem this may make it harder to find.

the only way is shut off the engine. gotta check the engine fluid. level most likely than not that's the main prob. if you keep the maintenance updated and you have a care protection, it won't hurt to take tt to them and said that it was fine before you took it to them for maintenance. But check the engine fluid level . Probably your battery's getting weak.

Buy a roll black electrical tape. Cut off a small piece. Tape it over the "check engine" light.

Make sure your gas cap is on tight, disconnet the battery, then pull the fuse.
