In Britain there was a long running TV show in which viewers would get to vote for the 'Greatest Briton in history. Each episode a candiate would be argued for by a well known contempory person. It was a great series and attracted more votes than pop idol. That is surprising for an intellectual show. Se some of significant Britons mentioned below.

I am interested in what an American top ten would look like - whats yours?

So here are some of the key Britons:

(a) Winston Churchill (he was votest Greatest by the public)

(b) William Shakespear

(c) Kingdom Brunel (Britain was the first country in the world to have an industrial revolution and he was the greatest industrial entrepeneur)

(d) Isaac Newton

(e) Charles Darwin

(f) Horatio Nelson - defeated Napoleon at Trafalgar and so stopped him conquering Britain as he had the rest of Europe.

(g) John Lennon

(i) Alan Turing (inventor of the computer)

(j) Alexander Fleming (discovered penicillin)

In no particular order:

1. Abraham Lincoln for saving the Union.
2. George Washington for founding the country.
3. Thomas Edison, the greatest inventor in American History
4. Martin Luther King, Jr.
5. James Hill, the railroad pioneer
6. The Wright Brothers for inventing flight.
7. Andrew Carnegie, the industrialist
8. Carl Sagen, the astronomer
9. Mark Twain, the Author
10. Fred Rogers, for making TV safe for kids

The Discovery Channel did a show called the Greatest Americans a few years ago where people just voted and then they told the outcome of the polling. The list was horrible and Ronald Reagan came in first, after a campaign by conservatives to inflate his importance. The BBC series was much better.
