The record you're talking about is the consecutive games with a hit, which is Dimaggio's 56.
The record for most consecutive hits is 12, set by Walt Dropo of the Tigers in 1952.

Did You Know... that in 1933, eight years before his famed 56-game hitting streak, Joe DiMaggio fashioned a 61-game hitting streak with the San Francisco Seals of the Pacific Coast League?
It will be a long time before DiMaggio's record will be broken....if ever.

It's Chase Utley, for one thing. And Joe DiMaggio hit in 56 straight games back in 1941, which is the record that still stands today.

But he hit a single in the 9th! His name is Chase Utley.
The all time record is 56 straight games, set in 1941 by Joe DiMaggio.

Georgie Porgie, Utley got two hits tonight. The first one was very questionable (a fielder's choice in my opinion) but the second hit was clean

That wasn't really a hit.
The offical scorer ruled it an error, then changed it to a FC, then (under pressure from the media) changed it to a hit.
So, in my book, it doesnt count.
A cheap shot to his 15 minutes of fame.
