He's not been himself for the past day or two. He won't run in his wheel or play like he normally does. In fact, he just sits in the corner, all curled up. If I hold him, he remains lethargic in my hand. When he tries to run in his wheel, he doesn't seem to be able to control his tail very well (it just sort of flops around) and he seems to be limping funny. He had a sneeze/cough for a while (more than a day or two). I changed his bedding and everything, but that still hasn't fully gone away. I'm concerned something may be seriously wrong. Besides taking him to a vet (obviously), any immediate suggestions? I'm really concerned about the little guy.

Is he getting older? Do you use pine or ceder bedding? Has there been a dramatic change in temperature?

All of the above can lead to a lethargic or sick mouse. Unfortunately mice are fairly good at hiding illness and you often don't see it until it has become severe. If you've switched bedding than I really can't suggest much other than a vet.

Did you buy him at a pet store? It is very common for pet store mice to not live as long or to be sick. The symptoms match a respiratory problem, which is common in all mice and rats.

I'm very sorry to hear about your mouse, and I hope he gets better. You really should take him to a vet though, as only he/she can tell you for sure and possibly help.

I have twelve mice (and growing) myself and know that they can be such great pets. I also breed them (http://mice.wordpress.com). Good luck! I'm very sorry.

The problem with mice and rats are that they don't live very long. Due to inbreeding they develop many diseases like respiratory infections and cancer. The other problem you face is that neither can be treated. There hasn't been any medical development for these small animals. Some things you could do to make sure he is more comfortable is continue to clean the bedding as use one that doesn't produce alot of dust and especially not cedar. Place him at room temperature, and keep plenty of fluids available. You could also try placing a small amount of plain flavored yogurt in his cage, we used this many times for small rodents and animals that were sick in a pet store I worked at.

i could call the vet, tell them what is going on and note what they say to do. in the adventure that they inform you to deliver your mouse in ask how a lot a elementary visit will value. do no longer ignore that any treatment or medicine will be better. some vets will workout a cost plan besides. Mine did. reliable success and that i'm hoping no longer something extreme is incorrect consisting of your mouse! only you need to be thoughtful of it really is emotions.

a mouse doesn't live very long - couple of years - but unless he is very old, you really need to go to a vet and get him treated.
Also check carefully that you are feeding him correctly, many pet mice are suffering from malnutrition. Ask your vet or go to the library to find some books on mice care if you are in doubt

Unfortunatly, it sounds like he's managed to get something in his lungs or his little body that he cant shake off. Your best bet is to call a local pet store, or a vet and get opinions there. With little critters such as mice ( i have 2 ) it's really an experts call.

How old is he?
Hamsters only live for about a year. Maybe two. Three is pushing it. It may be old age.
If he is still a young hamster, go to a vet. He needs medicine that only a vet can give him.
Good Luck
