Seems kinda stupid to have points but I feel like it's a marathon now. Do they do anything?

All the points really do is allow you to do more of what it is you're doing now.
After level 5, it's unlimited answers.
After Level 7, it's a footrace, or a marathon, if you will, to catch Jane and Kevin.

It gives you more rating. And it also increases your Level so that you can Answer, Ask, Vote and Rate more Questions each day. . .
And if you are the LEADER, your pick will be shown to everyone in YAHOO ANSWERS!!!

They don't do anything really. They just keep clocking up slowly. I think it's supposed to show how helpful you are when people vote on your answers.
It's a smart piece of marketing!
