My ps2 doesn't recognize dvd's at all, and it has trouble reading anything else. ps2 games suddenly pause to load in the middle of gameplay. ps1 games take a couple of tries to load it completely. this is a version 7 old ps2. i think the model number is 39001

You probably need to reduce the resistance on the DVD potentiometer. (No, I'm not making a joke)

This will increase the DVD laser strength.

See this guide for details,

My PS2 had that problem. You can try cleaning it with one of those lens cleaning discs. If that doesn't fix it, then your laser could be slightly misaligned. If that's the case, chances are you'll need a new unit. Sony can repair that, but it's almost as much as getting a new unit.

Either the disc is dirty or scratched. If that is not the problem the lens is dirty or scratched. The lens can be cleaned with a disc cleaner and a Q-tip. Be careful it is delicate, so use a light touch.

Sounds like your laser is defective.
Just make sure to tell them that you purchaed it just under a year or that it was a gift.

Mine was doing that. Kicking it, slamming it, and yelling at it didn't work. I had to take that sucker apart!
