It's not harmful, per se.
There have been reports of allergies and/or sensitivities to MSG, sometimes attributed to the free glutamic acid component, which has been blamed for causing a wide variety of physical symptoms such as migraines, nausea, digestive upsets, drowsiness, heart palpitations, asthma, anaphylactic shock, and many other complaints. "Chinese restaurant syndrome" is often used as an example of the symptoms purported to be caused by MSG.

It's not really harmful but can cause side effectes in some people. The glutamate in Monosodium glutamate can get into your nervous system and cause reactions such as tiredness or headaches. It can also affect your blood pressure and some people may have a reaction to it . The sodium can also raise your blood pressure. Children may be more prone to having a reaction to it - but adults can be affected also.

Glutamic acid is an amino acid commonly found in foods. Because MSG is absorbed very quickly (unlike glutamic acid-containing proteins in foods), it is known that MSG could spike blood plasma levels of glutamate. Glutamic acid is in a class of chemicals known as excitotoxins. Abnormally high levels of excitotoxins have been shown in hundreds of animal studies to cause damage to areas of the brain unprotected by the blood brain barrier and that a variety of chronic diseases can arise out of this neurotoxicity. The debate among scientists on the significance of these findings has been raging since the early 1970's, when Dr. John Olney found that high levels of glutamic acid caused damage to the brains of infant mice. Whether the increase in plasma glutamate levels from typical ingestion levels of MSG is enough to cause neurotoxicity in one dose or over time.
Whether humans are susceptible to the neurotoxicity from glutamic acid seen in some animal experiments.
Whether neurotoxicity from excitotoxins should consider the combined effect glutamic acid and other excitotoxins such as aspartic acid from aspartame.
It also contributes to obesity.

MSG is not harmful to human beings, at least not how it is really used in our food. It is used as a flavor enhancer, and it is also found NATURALLY in foods. I can easily imagine that any negative reports say it is linked to cancer because some scientist injected some rats with ridiculously high amounts of MSG. Of course, too much of anything is bad-you need variety in your diet and life! We are not rats, and we do not ingest the amount of MSG (or aspartame, or any other food additive) that is claimed to be linked to cancer in rats.
You can read up on the consensus at sites such as http://www.msgfacts.com/safety/msgsafety.html.
I really would not worry about MSG in foods for anyone, unless they have some proven allergy to it, as can happen with ANY food. Hope this helps!

Oh my Gawd--it can make you feel like you're dying with chest pains and bowel cramps. No matter what they say, if you are allergic, it will make for a miserable executive evening.
That is, it will make you avoid 5 star restaurants that use it (if any still do). It will improve flavor, but at the price of making you hate the guy who took you there for all eternity, especially when he laughs at you as you grab your chest or your tummy. And it will make you question all sense of your good judgment for having used it in the first place. Oh, it is the devil's spice and it will be your penance on earth, if you ever experience an attack from it!
Now, if you are a child, you will experience all of these symptoms magnified, and you will go to a therapist some day and say, "Now, look, you idiot, what my mother has done to me!" So, as you see, it tends to cloud their judgment, too, and is destructive of the family.
On the upside, if you *do* die of those chest pains, you will go straight to heaven. Yes, you will. You will have experienced purgatory here on earth!
As for me I sin no more! And, since my children are all GenY and I fear them, I naturally protect them from it, and myself as well.

From what I understand it is a form of salt and too much of that isn't good for anyone. It can cause water rentention, liver disorders and heart problems. I just watched a show on it this week. If we didn't use salt at all in our cooking or for seasoning our meals in a days time we would still have taken in too much just because of what the manufacturers put in our food! They hide it with clever names just like the one you asked about. Take care and I hope you have an amazing evening!

MSG should only be consurn for people with major asthma issues becuase in test studies it made there asthma worse. But this was only in mass quanities. Because it is a salt like substance it can also cause high blood pressure and other problems of a similar nature.

Mainly due to the high levels of sodium in it.
Too much sodium is bad and can cause high blood pressure.
Having said that, kids (usually) exercise enough to keep their blood pressure at acceptable levels so it may not be such a concern.
