I don't recommend self-publishing or vanity presses such as iuniverse or lulu, etc. They don't really get much respect in the writing world. However, I started my own publishing company from the ground up. I found that if you try to get into a smaller firm, and you sell the heck out of your book, it's easier to get the attention of an agent or larger publishing house. Feel free to contact me, and I can give you some advice on getting published.

Use an electronic format and then create a webpage that can accept credit card orders. Add it to a search engine, and there you go. Total cost....prolly under $1000.

Try cafepress.com

They'll let you publish just about anything independently.

Xlibris does a nice job, but as everyone said, it isn't recommended unless you are a dynamite sales person. Marketing yourself is hard.
