In addition to skill, determination, and a willingness to survive first law school, then the bar exam, then the post-grad associates jobs you'll need to gain experience?
It requires empathy. It requires caring about people, and understanding how they think. When you are presenting a case to the jury, or arguing a motion before the judge, you are telling a story. You are trying to convince your listeners that they should believe your interpretation of the law and the facts. And you can't do that if you can't relate well to people.
It also requires a balance of competence, confidence and humility. An arrogant lawyer will often lose, because his listeners (judge or jury) will sense that disdain and that superiority, and they won't like it. But on the flipside, it's necessary to be confident in what you're saying. And that requires being both creative enough and competent enough to know and apply the law well.
For every hot-shot lawyer, there are a thousand that do almost as good a job but don't get in the big spotlight. And for each of those, there are a thousand that just do their jobs reasonably well.
A lawyer should strive to do a good job, to serve their client well, and to share respect for the law. Greatness comes with experience and practice. Fame happens randomly.

Caring and empathy, faith and conviction. Being driven to fight to ensure justice for people who otherwise couldn't stand up for themselves. Most importantly, the absence of desire to be a "hotshot lawyer". Here's a story about a lawyer who exemplifies the above:

A bachelors degree,
A law degree,
Passage of a bar exam,
An entry level case law job,
Take a public defenders job,
Graduate to the prosecutors office,
Then go out on your own and be that "hot shot" lawyer.
